Barbour Classic Beaufort
A 1980s field-jacket design that keeps earning relevance because the materials, repairability and utility are still easy to understand.

Barbour's Beaufort is one of those pieces where heritage is not the whole explanation. The current Classic Beaufort uses a 6oz waxed-cotton outer, 100% cotton lining, corduroy collar, two-way zip, storm fly, handwarmer pockets, bellows pockets and the full-width rear game pocket that helped define the original.
At $450, the interesting question is not whether the jacket is luxurious. It is whether a maintainable waxed shell with a recognizable but low-drama design can remain useful for long enough to justify the premium over disposable outerwear.
What we know
What does the premium buy?
The rational baseline is a modern rain shell or lower-cost field jacket. Beaufort's premium buys maintainable waxed cotton, traditional construction, practical pocketing, repair/reproofing potential and decades of design continuity. It does not buy ultralight waterproof-breathable performance.
Benchmark · Heritage that still earns its utility
The Beaufort remains a reference point because the premium is attached to materials, maintenance and a long-lived design rather than trend. Buyers wanting technical minimalism or a sharper silhouette should choose differently.
The catch
Waxed cotton is not maintenance-free, and the relaxed Beaufort silhouette is intentionally traditional. Buyers wanting ultralight technical weatherproofing or a sharper tailored line should choose something else.
