Concept2 RowErg
A $990 rowing machine whose premium case is unusually clean: standardized performance data, institutional durability and no subscription required to keep using the hardware.

The RowErg became a training and racing standard because one machine can produce data comparable to another. The included PM5 tracks performance locally, while the air-resistance architecture lets effort—not a software difficulty setting—determine load.
The evidence sheet
What do you get instead of a screen and subscription?
Comparable metrics, proven serviceability, a large installed base and hardware that remains fully useful without recurring software spend. For training equipment, that is a stronger long-term value proposition than entertainment features for many buyers.
The durable benchmark
If rowing is the modality, the RowErg is difficult to improve upon economically because the core product is measurement consistency and durable hardware, not an ecosystem lock-in.
The catch
It is long, visually industrial and the fan is audible. Buyers motivated primarily by guided classes or furniture-like aesthetics may prefer a connected or water-resistance alternative.
