GE Profile Opal 2.0

A $600 countertop appliance dedicated to making one specific kind of ice—and somehow that is the whole appeal.

GE Profile Opal 2.0 nugget ice maker with side tank

GE's Opal 2.0 is built around soft, chewable nugget ice rather than conventional cubes. The side-tank version can produce up to 38 pounds per day, roughly 1.6 pounds per hour under GE's stated test conditions, with a three-pound storage bin.

This is a luxury of frequency. If nugget ice is a daily preference, the appliance can make sense. If it is an occasional novelty, the counter space is harder to defend.

What does the premium buy?

The rational baseline is refrigerator ice, bagged ice or a basic countertop ice maker. Opal's premium buys one very specific experience—continuous nugget ice on demand—plus integrated storage and side-tank convenience. There is little broader utility beyond that preference.

The Row

The machine is unusually good at a narrow job. Frequent nugget-ice households can rationalize it; everyone else should keep the counter space and the $600.

The catch

It is a large, single-purpose countertop appliance. The premium is rational only when the experience is used often enough to justify both the money and the space.
