Leica Q3 43
A nearly $8,000 fixed-lens camera whose narrow brief is exactly what makes it compelling: one body, one purpose-built 43mm APO lens, very few excuses.

The Leica Q3 43 is not interesting because it does more than every other camera. It is interesting because Leica built a high-end camera around a constraint: a specially developed APO-Summicron 43mm f/2 ASPH. lens that never comes off.
Behind it sits a full-frame sensor that can capture at 60.3, 36 or 18 megapixels. Leica also provides digital frame selections out to 150mm, an integrated macro mode, up to 8K video and IP52 protection. The result is a serious modern camera that still makes the owner commit to a point of view before pressing the shutter.
What we know
What does the premium buy?
The rational baseline is a high-end interchangeable-lens system that delivers more flexibility for less money. Leica's premium buys a purpose-built APO 43mm lens, full-frame sensor, compact integration, weather protection, German manufacture and the discipline of a fixed-lens system. It does not buy focal-length versatility.
Admire · Buy only if the fixed-lens constraint is the point
The Q3 43 is unusually coherent because the expensive parts all serve one photographic idea. Buyers who want one camera to cover many focal lengths should choose a system camera instead.
The catch
The fixed lens is either the entire point or the reason not to buy it. Digital cropping does not turn one physical lens into six optical focal lengths, and a more flexible system can cover far more photographic territory for the money.
