Montblanc Meisterstück Classique Fountain Pen
A $810 writing instrument whose case rests on nib craftsmanship, design continuity and ritual—not on practical writing performance per dollar.

Montblanc's Meisterstück remains a credible Row & Ledger object because the premium is unusually easy to locate. The Classique uses a black resin cap and barrel, gold-coated trim, an individually serialized clip and a handcrafted Au 585 / 14K gold nib with rhodium-coated inlay. Montblanc lists the medium-nib version at $810 and specifies a piston converter that can also accept cartridges.
That does not make it the rational answer to “what pen writes best?” A Pilot Custom 823, Pelikan, Lamy 2000 or even a well-tuned steel-nib pen can make a stronger function-per-dollar argument. The Meisterstück earns its slot because it combines a real writing mechanism, a long-lived serviceable format and one of the few luxury designs that has become almost archetypal.
What we know
What does the premium buy?
If the job is simply excellent handwriting feel, spend less. The premium buys a handcrafted gold nib, refillable longevity, serviceable construction, design continuity and the ritual of one of the category's archetypal objects. Brand and symbolism remain a real part of the price.
Admire · Buy only if the ritual matters
The premium is real, but so is the distinction. This is a stronger luxury object than a value pen; buyers indifferent to the design and ritual should choose a less expensive fountain pen.
The catch
At this price, brand and symbolism are meaningful parts of what you are paying for. Anyone indifferent to that should choose a less expensive fountain pen with equal or better writing performance.
