NEMO Moonlite Elite

A reclining backpacking chair for the hours after the walking is done. The clever part is the carrying case that becomes a ground platform.

NEMO Moonlite Elite chair in Black with its Platform Pack beneath the feet

The walk has ended. Dinner is still a little way off. There is a view worth keeping, but the available furniture is a wet log. This is the moment a backpacking chair has to justify every ounce carried during the afternoon.

The Moonlite Elite puts an unusually considered answer on the ground. NEMO lists the chair at 1.2 pounds, with a reclining suspension adjusted by slender cords. Its included Platform Pack wraps the collapsed chair for transport, then opens beneath the feet to provide a wider base on soft ground. The same piece does two jobs.

Premium Test

Buy back the evening

The premium makes most sense when sitting is a substantial part of the trip. A leisurely overnight, a long conversation outside the tent, an afternoon watching the light change: those are occasions in which the chair can contribute repeatedly. For a fast itinerary with short stops and an early bedtime, it may spend almost the entire trip as luggage.

A foam sit pad is the useful baseline. If keeping clothes off damp ground is the whole requirement, start there. The reason to carry a chair is the different posture and the possibility of settling in. That distinction is personal enough to make trying the seat before purchase more valuable than another ounce comparison.

The Catch

The platform is an aid for soft ground, not permission to ignore the surface beneath you. We would still choose a level place to sit and check the setup before leaning back. There are more pieces and connections here than in a pad; assembly is part of the bargain.

At $189.95, occasional use is hard to defend on utility alone. A chair that lives mostly in a car also faces a different comparison: portability on foot no longer deserves much of the budget. Give the ultralight design credit only for a constraint you actually have.

The Row

For the person who lingers

We admire the case becoming part of the seating system. Consider the Moonlite Elite if your trips routinely include unhurried evenings and you want to carry a reclining seat to them. Decline it if you are already happy sitting on a pad, or if a heavier chair can stay beside the car.

Before deciding, sit in one, rehearse packing it and add the complete kit to your own load. The best chair is the one that improves the stop enough that you keep bringing it.
