Sennheiser HD 800 S
A $2,000 open-back headphone that makes almost no attempt to be convenient—and is more coherent because of it.

HD 800 S is built around Sennheiser's 56mm ring-radiator dynamic transducer, open-back earcups and a 300-ohm load intended for dedicated listening rather than commuting. The company specifies a 4Hz–51kHz frequency response and includes both 6.35mm and balanced 4.4mm cables.
The value proposition is unusually narrow: resolution, spatial presentation and a full-size home-listening architecture, without Bluetooth, noise cancellation or portability pretending to be part of the product.
What is actually here
What does the premium buy?
A good $400–$700 headphone can deliver excellent listening. Here the extra spend is attached to a specialized transducer platform, matching, open-back acoustics and a product designed around critical listening rather than feature accumulation.
Benchmark for dedicated listening
For the buyer building a quiet home listening setup, HD 800 S remains a useful reference point. For travel, offices or casual streaming, almost every expensive attribute is pointed at the wrong job.
The Catch
Open backs leak sound and isolate almost nothing. The 300-ohm load also makes source and amplification more relevant than with mainstream headphones, while fit and tonal preference still require human verification.
