Best Portable Speakers for Home & Away
“Portable” covers everything from a three-pound travel speaker to a six-pound home speaker with a charging base. The useful question is how much mobility you actually need before paying for more sound, software and battery.

The Row

JBL Charge 6
Three pounds, IP68 protection, up to 28 hours and power-bank duty give the strongest portability-to-capability balance.

Sonos Move 2
Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Sonos multi-room integration and a charging base make sense when the speaker moves around a property more than through airports.

Bose SoundLink Max
20-hour battery, IP67 protection, USB-C in/out and a 4.9-pound chassis for buyers who want a larger portable without a home-audio ecosystem.
The evidence sheet
| Product | Price | Weight | Battery | Protection / ecosystem |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JBL Charge 6 | $199.95 list | 3 lb | Up to 28 hr | IP68 · Auracast · power bank |
| Sonos Move 2 | $499 | 6.61 lb | Up to 24 hr | IP56 · Wi-Fi · AirPlay 2 · replaceable battery |
| Bose SoundLink Max | $399 | 4.9 lb | Up to 20 hr | IP67 · Bluetooth 5.4 · USB-C |
More speaker usually means less portability.
Sonos and Bose spend the premium on larger hardware, charging architecture and—in Sonos’s case—home-network software. JBL wins the general recommendation because it preserves the reason to buy a portable speaker in the first place: you can actually carry it without planning around it.
The decision that matters
Choose JBL for trips, patios and general household use. Choose Sonos when it will live mostly at home but needs to move between rooms, yard and charging base. Choose Bose when you want a larger standalone Bluetooth speaker without buying into Sonos.
Define what portable means in your life
A speaker carried between rooms has different requirements from one packed for a beach or flight. At home, charging convenience, multiroom behavior and sound at moderate volume may matter most. Away from home, weight, water resistance, stable Bluetooth behavior and the ability to survive a bag become more important than ecosystem features that disappear off Wi-Fi.
Judge battery claims against the volume normally used and remember that boost modes, device charging and cold weather can change endurance. Also decide whether the speaker must be easy to replace or worth repairing. The premium earns itself when the same object reliably follows the environments you use—not when a nominally portable speaker is too heavy or precious to leave the shelf.
The catch
We do not rank these on subjective sound quality without hands-on listening. The Row here is based on documented portability, connectivity, battery, durability and ownership architecture.
JBL Charge 6
For most buyers, Charge 6 spends the premium where portable audio benefits most: battery, weather protection, output and a practical three-pound form.
