OWC Express 1M2
A finned aluminum portable SSD with a replaceable drive inside. Its appeal is a reusable working tool for a compatible desk.

The Express 1M2 looks like the part of a computer that normally stays hidden: a large heat sink with a drive beneath it. That is the attraction. The case has a job, and the storage inside can be replaced instead of making the whole object disposable when capacity needs change.
This Find concerns the original 40Gb/s model, configured with 2TB of storage. OWC’s US store listed it at $599.99 on September 10, 2026. That is a substantial purchase for a drive. Its case becomes stronger when it holds active projects on a compatible workstation; carrying occasional documents does not justify it.
The configuration that matters
Exact 2TB listing and manufacturer specifications. An enclosure-only order contains no storage and carries a different warranty.
A case you can keep
The interesting premium is the combination of a faster connection and a serviceable enclosure. Someone who already has a suitable spare NVMe drive can price the empty case separately. Someone buying a complete solution can avoid the assembly decision now while retaining that option later.
That flexibility has value only if it gets used. Before paying for it, establish whether the current work actually waits on external storage. A faster drive will not shorten a task whose constraint is elsewhere.
The Catch
Connection details can erase the speed argument. OWC’s manual limits Thunderbolt 3 hosts to USB 10Gb/s performance and lists specific bus-power restrictions. A port’s shape is not a compatibility guarantee. Check the full setup, particularly if several devices share power through a dock.
The aluminum case also does not establish weather protection: no IP rating was found in the sources reviewed. This is the drive to consider for a working desk that sometimes travels, rather than a reason to stop protecting equipment in a bag.
For an active project library
We admire the replaceable storage and purposeful enclosure. Our recommendation is provisional and specific: consider it when a compatible desk, an active external library and the option to reuse the case all matter. Decline it when ordinary file transport is the whole job.
OWC’s newer 80G version deserves its own host and price comparison. This original model remains relevant because its documented USB 10Gb/s fallback can suit a mixed collection of computers. See the portable SSD Guide for the travel alternative and the checks to make before buying.
